Buying Ceremonial Grade Matcha in Bulk: What the Label Does and Doesn’t Tell You

Published:

Hello from ICHIZEN. When you search for bulk matcha, many listings carry the words “ceremonial grade.” If you are buying for a café, a brand, or a distributor, you may wonder how much that label should guide your choice.

This guide explains what “ceremonial grade” does and does not tell you, and how to compare bulk matcha on information you can actually check.

What does “ceremonial grade” mean?

“Ceremonial grade” is a term used mainly in marketing outside Japan. It is not an official Japanese tea category, and there is no shared standard behind it. One seller may use it for their highest-priced tea, while another uses it more broadly.

That does not make the label meaningless, but it does mean you should ask each supplier what they mean by it. Our ceremonial grade matcha checklist explains this in more detail.

What should you compare instead?

When buying in bulk, compare details that a supplier can explain and that you can verify with samples.

  • Growing origin and harvest, such as which region the leaves come from and whether they are first-flush.
  • Who selects and finishes the tea.
  • Ingredients, such as whether the product is 100% matcha or contains sugar, flavorings, or milk powder.
  • Pack sizes and storage guidance.
  • Consistency across repeat orders.

These details tell you more about what you are buying than a grade label alone.

Match the matcha to how you will use it

A matcha that tastes wonderful whisked with water may not be the best choice for a latte, and the reverse can also be true. For lattes, look at how the color and aroma hold up with milk. For drinking straight, focus on the balance of aroma, umami, and bitterness.

Test samples in your actual recipe. Keep the amount of matcha and the other ingredients the same so the comparison is fair, and compare the cost per cup rather than the price per bag.

Think about pack size and freshness

Matcha is sensitive to humidity, light, and air. Choose pack sizes you can use up within a reasonable time after opening. Our guide to buying bulk matcha covers this in more detail.

Look past the label to the tea

“Ceremonial grade” can be a starting point, but the decision is better made on origin, who selected the tea, ingredients, and how the samples perform in your recipe.

ICHIZEN is 100% matcha from first-flush Kyoto-grown tea, selected for matcha lattes by Wakimoto Jokoen, a Kyoto tea merchant now in its fourth generation. If you are comparing matcha for your menu or your brand, please contact us through our wholesale inquiry page.

FAQ

Is “ceremonial grade” an official standard for matcha?

No. “Ceremonial grade” is a term used in marketing, especially outside Japan, and is not an official Japanese tea category. Its meaning depends on the seller, so ask what they mean by it.

Should a café buy ceremonial grade matcha for lattes?

Not necessarily. What matters is how the matcha tastes and looks with your milk and sweetness. Test samples in your latte recipe and compare the cost per cup before deciding.

What information should I ask for when buying ceremonial grade matcha in bulk?

Ask about the growing origin, harvest, who selects and finishes the tea, ingredients, pack sizes, and storage guidance. Request samples so you can check taste, aroma, and color in your intended use.
